Copenhagen-based Nordisk Games has fully acquired Supermassive Games, the BAFTA-winning, independent game developer best known for the critically acclaimed narrative games Until Dawn, House of Ashes and the recently released The Quarry. The acquisition follows Nordisk Games taking a 30.7% stake in the studio in March 2021.
Supermassive Games was founded in 2008 and since then has grown to more than 250 talented developers that share the studio’s love of high-end production values and cinematic excellence. Supermassive Games has received numerous awards for its dark and immersive narrative games, including a BAFTA for PS4 game Until Dawn. Its most recent title, The Quarry, follows the story of a team of camp counsellors who go through an unexpected final night, with the player guiding the outcomes of who might make it through to the next morning.
“It’s been just over a year since we began working closely with the team at Nordisk Games and the experience and expertise they have brought, plus the additional resources that come from being part of a larger family of studios, have been clear. I’m sure I can speak for everyone at Supermassive when I say that, having had such a positive experience over the past year, it wasn’t a difficult decision when Mikkel Weider, Markus Windelen, and the team at Nordisk Games wanted to explore increasing their investment. I’m excited about where this partnership will take us next,” said Pete Samuels, CEO of Supermassive Games.
Nordisk Games is owned by entertainment company Nordisk Film, a part of Egmont, a leading Nordic media group. In recent years Nordisk Games has built a high-growth portfolio of minority and majority-owned game studios that includes Avalanche Studios Group, Star Stable Entertainment, Flashbulb Games, Nitro Games, and MercurySteam.
”In the year we’ve worked alongside Pete and Joe and the whole Supermassive team, it’s been clear to us the amount of talent, as well as how much potential there is to further develop the kinds of story and narrative-driven games they excel at,” said Mikkel Weider, CEO of Nordisk Games. “In acquiring 100% of the studio we’ll be able to increase our support to the team, and most importantly, continue the great working relationship we have with them."
